Worcester Educational Development Foundation, Inc. (WEDF) was founded in 2005 for the sole purpose of supporting students and teachers in the Worcester Public Schools. WEDF, fashioned operationally and structurally after the highly successful Boston Educational Development Foundation, Inc.
The WEDF is similar to hundreds of other organizations across the country that support school districts and will not supplant tax dollars, but rather will provide support for the enhancement of programs and facilities that address the many needs of a large urban school system.
Since its founding, the WEDF has raised and distributed more than $2.4 million, including the renovation of Commerce Bank Field at Foley Stadium. In the 2009-2010 school year alone, the WEDF provided $90,000 to schools in the Doherty Quadrant, including Midland Street School. The programs and projects those funds supported include:
- New musical instruments for all elementary, middle and high schools
- Science equipment
- Julie Andrews Artist-in-Residence Award
- College scholarships
- College preparation programs – AVID
